Satan

The spiritual archenemy of the church is Satan. He is a trickster, cheat and thief and his mission is to destroy each member of the church of Jesus Christ. Because he is out to destroy us, we need to understand our enemy and how he works.

The Bible teaches that Satan has many names and titles: devil, Beelzebub, god of this world, murderer, prince of the devils, prince of this world, accuser, adversary, ruler of darkness, serpent, tempter, unclean spirit, wicked one, father of lies.

This study will be divided into six parts by answering six specific questions.

1. Who is Satan?

2. What was Satan’s original sin?

3. Is Satan a real person or just an evil force?

4. How does Satan work?

5. How can we expect Satan to come against us?

6. What is the believer’s position in reference to Satan?

1. Who is Satan?

Satan was and still is a powerful and beautiful angelic being.

* Ezekiel 28:12

Satan has one-third of all angels under his control.

Satan is called the god and prince of this world.

Satan has a kingdom.

2. What was Satan’s original sin that got him cast to earth

Satan’s initial sin began in his heart’s desire to be worshiped like God Almighty.

* Isaiah 14:12-17 The five “I will’s” of Satan:

1. I will ascend to heaven.

2. I will raise my throne above the stars of God.

3. I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.

4. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds.

5. I will make myself like the Most High.

3. Is Satan real, or just a type of evil force?

* Job 1:6-12, 2:1-7 - talked with God about Job

* 1 Chronicles 21:1 - rose up to bring disaster upon Israel

4. How does Satan work?

A. Satan will lie and cheat.

B. Satan will try to yank and steal the Word of God that is in your heart.

C. Satan tries to blind the mind of believers so they won’t get saved.

D. Satan places his people in the midst of the saints to bamboozle and defraud the church.

E. Satan will tempt God’s people in order to get the best of them and sway them away from God’s purpose.

F. Satan will twist the Scriptures for his purposes.

G. Satan will attempt to stop God’s people from doing the work of God.

H. Satan uses counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders.

I. Satan accuses the people of God.

J. Satan steals, destroys and even tries to kill God’s people.

L. Satan will cause God’s people to be sick in order to keep them in bondage.

M. Satan tries to bring bondage to God’s people through fear.

 5. How can we expect Satan to come against God’s people?

A. He might come against us as an angel of light.

B. He might come against us through his servants.

C. We can expect him to come against us like a roaring lion.

6. What is a believer’s position in reference to Satan?

A. When there’s an encounter, we can withstand and resist Satan.

B. We need to be careful not to give Satan a foothold or any opportunity to cause us to deviate from the straight and narrow.

* Ephesians 4:27

C. When we combat Satan, we must not use carnal weapons.

D. We overcome Satan by our confession and the blood of Jesus Christ.

E. We overcome Satan by understanding our relationship with our Heavenly Father and the power that comes from that relationship.

F. We must understand that Satan is a defeated enemy and, as believers, we are delivered out of his control and authority. He has no power over the Children of God. Satan’s only weapon is a lie.
